Change of life - Women's Health

16 August 2018

Known as 'change of life', menopause brings with it any number of health symptoms and changes due to a drop in the body's production of the hormone oestrogen.

The official definition of menopause is when a woman has not had a menstrual cycle for 12 months.  However menopause symptoms can start up to five (5) years prior to menopause - this is known as perimenopause.

The common symptoms associated with this time of life include, but are not limited to:

  • night sweats
  • hot flushes
  • aches and pains
  • crawling or itching sensations under the skin
  • forgetfulness
  • headaches
  • irritability
  • lack of self-esteem
  • reduced sex drive (libido)
  • sleeping difficulty
  • tiredness
  • urinary frequency
  • vaginal dryness
  • increased risk of bone fractures

But it is also a normal, natural part of the ageing process.  There are a lot of things that can help with symptom relief - so don't suffer in silence.

The Australian Menopause Society has some wonderful extra information on their website, for more information click here.
